Don Mituzas Located Alexa's Lost Engagement Ring
At the September 2017 club meeting, members were entreated to a heartfelt testimonial
from Alexa O'Rourke, who had lost her engagement ring at the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Park
on August 25th, 2017 while removing her softball glove during a company picnic. With
the help of numerous friends, roughly a dozen co-workers, and additional family members,
she searched the area for what seemed like countless hours over the span of four days.
On Tuesday, August 29th, Don Mituzas responded to an email asking for assistance with
locating the lost ring. Don arrived at the park around noon and Alexa pointed out the
general location of where she had been when the ring was lost. Don indicated that
his strategy was to eliminate the less likely areas of where the ring might be and to
concentrate on the thicker grass, where it would be harder to find.
After about thirty-five minutes, Don found the missing ring and casually walked over to Alexa
to return it. Upon asking her to demonstrate again the way she took her hand out of the
glove, he dropped the ring into her open hand. Words cannot do justice in describing her
simultaneouos expressions of surprise, relief, excitement, and joy in that one moment!
Don said that his personal satisfaction was derived from seeing the happiness that resulted
from presenting a missing ring to the owner. Ordinarily, metal detectors are not
allowed in federal parks, but the ranger staff were all familiar with the saga of the recently
lost ring, and so they easily provided an exception.
Alexa attended the September club meeting to recount the story and extend her personal gratitude.
